Alterations & Repairs

 

Learn a multitude of ways to alter and repair clothes you love: patching techniques for knits and woven fabrics, zipper replacement including trouser flies, taking in garments through tucks and darts and altering tailored garments with vents and hems. Learn some fitting techniques and how to translate fitting issues into a realized alteration. Classes will include demonstrations of common challenges. Bring in a personal garment to fit and alter. Prerequisite: Basic Sewing or equivalent skills. Limit 6 students

  • Standard Scissors (NOT Gingham or other fabric scissors)
  • Awl
  • Scotch tape
  • 4H Pencils (2 to 3)
  • Pencil Sharpener
  • Dressmaker’s pencil (Blue)
  • Thumbtacks
  • Dressmakers/Quilter's Ruler (18”)
  • Class 66 bobbins (plastic; please bring at least 3)
  • Dressmaker shears (best quality are Fiskars or Gingher)
  • Assorted machine sewing needles
  • Assorted hand sewing needles
  • Common pins
  • Pin cushion
  • Seam ripper
  • Dressmaker’s pencil or tailor’s chalk
  • Tape measure 60”
  • Contrasting thread for basting
  • Thimble
  • Needle threader
  • Safety pins
The following projects will be addressed. If you have garment that needs any of the following please bring it with you. Please bring all garments
 you wish to alter/change first class so we can discuss. Projects outside the ideas listed below can also be brought in and discussed, within reason. Of you do not have a garment that needs one of the following, we will work on examples/samples.
  • Heming a garment (skirt/pants)
  • Patching a hole
  • Darning a hole in a sweater
  • Taking in a fitted/structured garment (jacket, dress etc) please note shoulders in a jacket will NOT be covered or recommended
  • Taking up shoulder straps
  • Repairing/changing closure/zippers
  • Any required materials for garment repairs:
  • Matching Fabric
  • Matching thread
  • Hem/bias tape
  • Zippers
  • Closures (buttons, hooks etc)
  • Embroidery floss, darning wool or button hole thread (if darning a hole in knit/sweater fabric)
