Assemblage with Found Objects 1W27
Are you a collector? Do you have bins of old family photos, paper ephemera, and assorted mementos and baubles? Do you believe your collections have a higher calling? If so, then this is the class for you!
Students start with a wooden box, and with a little creativity, ingenuity and glue create their own assemblage with found objects. Whether it be a photo of a great aunt, a collection of buttons, assorted figurines or paper ephemera, students will find new meaning and (re)purpose in all things both cherished and banal.
Please note, students provide, and should bring to the FIRST class, their own found objects and wooden box(es). Please read the material list.

Amy Hitchcock
Amy can usually be found in second hand-shops collecting. She loves vintage bisque doll parts, sewing notions, old photos of strangers and rusty nails.
Along the way her assemblages and collages have been shown in various open studio events, businesses, museums and galleries in Greater Boston.
Amy studied anthropology and art history in college and has a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree from Harvard University Extension School. She has taught at the Eliot School since 2009, and finds great joy showing others the ins and outs of mixed media art.
Please bring to the first class: (Bring more than you think you need!)
- Wooden box to create assemblage in (for example: wooden cigar boxes, small wooden drawers, vintage jewelry boxes)
- Found objects from your home or second hand shops. Etsy and ebay are also good sources. See Amy's website to see the kind of found objects she uses in her assemblages: https://www.amyhitchcock.com
- Photographs - you can use originals or copies
- Assorted papers. For example: decorative papers, maps, vintage ephemera
- X-acto knife (recommended- size 11)
- 8 oz acrylic gel medium, matte finish (recommended liquitex or golden brand). Make sure its not "ultra matte" or "heavy". Example: https://www.dickblick.com/items/liquitex-gel-medium-matte-8-oz-jar/
- 1 ½” or 2" plastic putty knife
- Small sketchbook
- Nylon flat brushes. Recommended size 1 ½’ and ½” wide.
OPTIONAL (Instructor will go over these in the first class.)
- Acrylic paints
- Balsa Wood sheets ⅛” thick and ¼” thick
- 5 minute epoxy
