Basic Sewing I

Learn how to operate a sewing machine and read and understand patterns; learn basic sewing terms, sewing methods and tools of the trades. Then apply your newly found skills by sewing a pillow, apron or simple drawstring pants. Completion qualifies students for intermediate classes. Limit 6 students.

Completion qualifies students for Intermediate Sewing and a variety of classes that lead toward fashion design and clothing construction.

Please plan to use our machines. If time allows, the instructor may invite you to bring your own to the final session.

Bring to the first class:

  • Class 66 bobbins (plastic; please bring at least 3)
  • Dressmaker shears (best quality are Fiskars or Gingher)
  • Paper scissors
  • Assorted machine sewing needles
  • Assorted hand sewing needles
  • Common pins
  • Pin cushion
  • Seam ripper
  • Dressmaker’s pencil or tailor’s chalk
  • Tape measure 60”
  • Ruler
  • Dark and light color thread for basting
  • Thimble
  • Needle threader
  • Sewing gauge
  • Tracing Paper

Fabric will be discussed in class.
