Collage as Storytelling 1W27

Age Group:
Adults

Collage is more than cutting and gluing—it is a way of collecting fragments and discovering unexpected connections. In this three-session, hands-on workshop, students will explore collage as a way of telling, constructing, disrupting, and discovering stories through images, materials, and composition.

Working with photographs, magazines, books, found ephemera, painted paper, drawings, text, and other everyday materials, participants will experiment with cutting, tearing, layering, cropping, scale, juxtaposition, repetition, and sequencing. Through guided prompts and playful exercises, students will create visual narratives, imagined spaces, and surprising associations from fragments.

Designed for beginners and experienced artists alike, the workshop emphasizes experimentation and developing a personal visual language rather than working toward a predetermined outcome. Over the three sessions, students will have time to follow ideas as they emerge, see how different materials influence their work, and build a collection of finished collage pieces.

Please note the class will take place in Eliot's Sewing Room and the Art Room (both on the 2nd floor) during your workshop series, as follows:

  • 4/11 (Sewing Room)
  • 4/18 & 4/25 (Art Room)

*No make-up class

Becker Schmidt

Becker Schmidt

Grounded in a love for working with their hands, Becker (they.them) continually challenges themself to honor their life through making. Holding a BFA in Product Design, a MS in Urban Resilience, and a M.Arch, their artistic practice is about finding self and honoring community through architecture, art, and craft.

Currently working in clay, collage, and printmaking, Becker moves between the functional and playful, asking how everyday details can hold memory, humor, and emotion. Each piece reflects a curiosity about how objects shape our rituals, define our relationships, and tell our stories.
