Intermediate Clothing Projects

Bring a pattern, either purchased or your own from Pattern Alterations or Pattern Making, and construct your garment in class. Determine which fabric and closures are best for your plans, troubleshoot surprise sewing issues and acquire high-end sewing habits—even some couture techniques. Go home with a finished piece of fashion that fits you well. Prerequisites: Intermediate Sewing or Clothing Projects, plus Pattern Alterations, Pattern Making or equivalent skills. Limit 6 students

Intermediate Sewing or Basic Clothing Construction plus Pattern AlterationsPattern Making or equivalent experience.


We will supply sewing machines (or you may bring your own).

Please bring your sewing kit to the first class:

  • Class 66 bobbins (plastic; please bring at least 3 to class)
  • Dressmaker shears (Fiskars, Weiss or Gingher are recommended)
  • Paper scissors
  • Assorted hand sewing needles
  • Straight pins
  • Pin cushion
  • Seam ripper
  • Tailor's chalk, chalk wheel, or water-erasable pen
  • Tape measure 60”
  • Dark and light color thread for basting
  • Thimble
  • Needle threader
  • Safety pins

To the first class session, also bring sketching materials: a pad of drawing paper and pencils.

After sketching and finalizing your design, you will want to purchase:

  • Tracing paper (sheets or a roll, at least 18" wide)
  • 1.5 yards of muslin (at least 44" wide, some shops sell narrower widths)
  • Pencils and 2 different colored pens (sharpies work well)
  • Ruler (18" x 2" or 24" x 6" clear ruler is best for pattern making)
  • Fabric for your project
