A la Prima Watercolor: Find Your Voice!
Curious about watercolor? This three-session course introduces students to watercolor through guided, hands-on practice that supports experimentation and personal expression.
Students will learn the basics of watercolor materials, color mixing, wet-on-wet techniques, and simple composition, along with ways to use color and observation to suggest mood and atmosphere. Each class includes a new set of exercises designed to build skills and confidence while keeping the focus on process and discovery.
Working from observation and reference, students will explore brushwork, color, and composition while embracing spontaneity and fresh, expressive marks. This class encourages curiosity, flexibility, and creative confidence, offering a refreshing and engaging way to experience watercolor in a supportive environment. Class sessions may occasionally include working outdoors en plein air, weather permitting.
Designed with beginners in mind but levels are welcome. No prior experience required.

Katya Popova
Katya Popova is a Russian-born, Boston-based multidisciplinary artist. She received her fine arts training in Moscow, Russia, before earning her BFA in graphic design from the Rhode Island School of Design.
Katya’s performance practice began in 2013, initially exploring shadow theater and sound-based projects, and later expanding to include physical theater and puppetry. Since 2008, she has been a member of the Boston Butoh group, led by Ellen Godena (Sara June), and has participated in numerous workshops with Katsura Kan. She also participated in the Salish Sea Festival in 2022.
Over the past ten years, Katya has presented her work at various street festivals (such as Ignite and ArtBeat), shows, and galleries, including Hearing Room (Lowell, MA), Installation Space (North Adams), Somerville Museum, the Brickbottom Artist Association etc.. She has also taken part in artist residencies, including one at MASS MoCA in 2019, and collaborated on projects with the Bread and Puppet Theater, notably in their production of The Persians. Additionally, Katya was involved with Somerville Open Studios, both as a participant and as a member of the Board of Directors, contributing to the local arts community.
Since 2016, Katya has been teaching courses on visual art, design, and performance at the New England Conservatory of Music.
Materials to bring to class:
Please bring the following materials to your class. If you already have watercolor paints/paper, then you should bring those and we can make them work.

- Watercolor set
- Canson paper pad
- Artist tape
- Brush Set (set of 12)
- Paint palette to hold the paints. A plastic plate is fine.
- 1 white foam board (16x20)
The teacher will bring some extra materials for students to use in class.
