Upholstery Intensive 4M23
Take a week off from your summer routine and spend it in our upholstery workshop! Spend five full days working on a project of your choice.
This class follows an open workshop format, incorporating students of all levels. Work at your own pace, on your own piece of furniture, with the teacher as your guide. Leave your work out in the shop and start each morning without having to set up. If you want to complete something in one week, a small chair or ottoman is your best choice.
The instructor will provide essential materials, including cotton batting, burlap, muslin, Camric, welting cord, Dacron, and spray glue for the $50 materials fee (included in tuition).
Leave yourself time for fabric shopping after Day 1. Limit 8 students.
*Please Note:
- Please bring sound furniture only. We do not offer repair services and any repairs should be completed prior to (re)upholstering.
- If you will need help moving/lifting your piece when you are on-site, please contact the Office at least two weeks before your class begins to make arrangements with our Facilities Manager.

I've wanted to take this class with Kathleen for years! When I saw an opening during my summer break, I grabbed it. I make furniture and have wanted to learn how to incorporate upholstery. Each student had a unique project, and we got to learn a lot from each other. Kathleen pushed us to take on challenges, and had great ideas for how to improve upon the original
upholstery of our pieces.
Kathleen Gaskin
Kathleen Gaskin is proprietor of Decorator’s Workroom (Jamaica Plain), an upholstery shop which she founded in 1990. She grew up in Trinidad, where her father was a joiner and carpenter and her mother a seamstress and chair caner. She is proud to follow in their footsteps.
Kathleen has received numerous awards for her contributions to Jamaica Plain and the City of Boston, including the 2009 Local Hero Award from Vinfen, 2010 Award for outstanding contributions to Boston’s neighborhooods from Action for Boston Community Development, and 2005 Community Leadership Award from Spontaneous Celebrations.
Kathleen first taught at the Eliot School in 1991.
