Intro to CNC: Custom Wooden Inlays 1W26

Intro to CNC will teach you the basics of 2D and 2.5D designing for CNC machines as you create your own custom design. Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines process information received from a computer to cut, carve, or otherwise affect a material. In this class, students will be using a CNC router and wood as the main material. This course will outline how to create and adjust vectors (lines) and how to program tool paths to these vectors to create cutouts and pockets.
In this 4 week course, use the CNC router to create custom wooden inlays onto boards of wood that can then be used to make a cutting board or a plaque! By using the CNC students will be able to design and create with precision, whether it’s an intricate pattern or an image of a friend, the CNC can make it. To make the inlays we will use 2 different contrasting woods, carve out a positive and negative with the CNC, then glue, plane, and finish the wood.

My work explores how experiences and relationships can be mediated through technology. I specialize in digital fabrication (laser engraving, CNC cutting/carving, and 3D printing) and woodworking. A laptop is required for this class. The Eliot School can lend up to 3 laptops during class time; other students must bring their own. You must choose during registration which option you would like.
