Intro to Indigo Shibori 1F26
Join us for an introductory workshop exploring the basics of Japanese indigo Shibori.
Shibori is a traditional Japanese resist-dye technique that uses a variety of textile manipulation methods to produce patterns when fabric is immersed in indigo dye. Experiment with tying, folding, compressing, wrapping, stitching, and twisting fabric to create functional and beautiful pieces.
We’ll explore design motifs and approaches including itajime (binding techniques) and arashi (pole wrapping).
Students will leave with an appreciation of this ancient art form, foundational Shibori skills, and hand-dyed napkins and tea towels that can be used as intended or further developed into pillow shams, quilts, and other textile projects at home.
This class does not have a make up date.

I have been practicing Shibori design for thirty years including itajime (pleated technique), arashi (pole-wrapping technique) and stitched shibori. I am largely self-taught and have also attended classes in Japanese Indigo Shibori at The Eliot School of Fine & Applied Arts in Jamaica Plain. I have formally taught Shibori at Boston College’s Art Club and various adult education classes in the Boston area leading groups of 6-30 students in the practice Japanese Indigo Shibori. I have also enjoyed sparking the love of Shibori in many children and adults in my backyard and in other natural settings.
All materials included in tuition.
Students are welcome to bring an item or two from home made of 100 percent natural fibers to dye if they'd like.
