Oaxacan Woodcarving with Master Carver Norberto Fabian 1F26

Oaxacan woodcarving is renowned for its charming, animated, colorfully painted animals. Learn basic tools and techniques of this folk art form, passed down through generations, from master carver Norberto Fabian, who lives and works in the woodcarving village of San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca, Mexico. Using soft copal wood (provided in class), carve a simple figure (armadillo, hummingbird, fish, turtle or bee, etc.). Then paint either your own creation or a small, unpainted piece carved by the instructor. See examples at The Dancing Chickens.

Norberto's father, the late Ventura Fabian, was one of Oaxaca's most respected and accomplished master woodcarvers. Clients from all over the world sought out his work, yet he remained a humble, shy man who still tended his animals in the field each day. Ventura became an inspiration and teacher to many of the younger carvers in his village, including members of his extended family. Norberto took over the business while invoking his father’s spirit in his own work. The Fabian family carvings will be exhibited and sold immediately following the class, from 5-6pm.
