Build Your Own Adirondack Chair 1F26

Build Your Own Adirondack Chair!
In this hands-on woodworking class, students of all ages and skill levels will design and build a classic Adirondack chair from scratch in just 15 hours. Guided by instructor Derek Skapars—an experienced woodworker known for his approachable, encouraging teaching style—students will gain confidence working in the wood shop through step-by-step instruction.
By the end of the class, each student will leave with a fully built Adirondack chair ready for finishing. The instructor will demonstrate a range of finishing options—such as using exterior-grade stain, paint, sealants, or oil—so students can confidently apply the finish of their choice at home.
Participants will learn how to safely and effectively use essential power tools, including the table saw, chop saw, jigsaw, and drill press, along with a variety of hand tools. Emphasis is placed on shop safety, sound technique, and thoughtful craftsmanship throughout the build process.
Material Fee: $135, paid directly to the instructor by cash, Venmo, or check.
Each student will receive a shrink-wrapped lumber kit of eastern white pine in raw plank form, allowing students to mill, shape, and build their chair from the ground up.
The classic Adirondack Chair (L), customized by one of Derek's students (R), incorporating a cup holder.
Derek Skapars

Derek Skapars is a dedicated father, husband, and lifelong maker whose happiest moments are spent building—whether guiding students through a wooden boat project or working alongside his family at home. Rooted in Massachusetts and shaped by years of hands-on craft, he brings warmth, patience, and deep respect for the learning process to every classroom.
His love of woodworking started when he was seven years old helping his dad install an oak hardwood floor in their home. Years later, and with a decade long career teaching wood shop, he has taught over 35 Adirondack chair making workshops (to all ages!) and was a two-time presenter of ‘The Psychology of the Build” at Gillette Stadium’s MassCue events.
There is a material fee of $135 paid directly to the instructor on the first day of class.
Students do not need to bring any of their own materials to class. Each student will receive a shrink-wrapped lumber kit of eastern white pine in raw plank form, allowing students to mill, shape, and build their chair from the ground up.
