Learn how to hone your eye and tell stories through pictures in this introductory digital photography course. Over the course of four sessions, you will learn how to operate a DSLR/mirrorless camera, the ins and outs of manual exposure, and the importance of composition and frame in photography. We will explore different genres of photography, including landscape and portrait, using our immediate environs in Jamaica Plain as a site of play and exploration.
Students will come away with a deeper understanding of how images can convey a narrative, theme, or feeling, through use of compositional elements such as light, subject, and color.
This class will include some photo walks in the Jamaica Plain area. Please bring a water bottle, appropriate clothing, or any other items you may need to comfortably traverse 10-20 minutes in flat and inclined paths.
Do you need access to an Eliot School camera or are you bringing your own? The Eliot School has 4 cameras available, please indicate at checkout in the "Order Comments" section whether you plan to use your own camera or need the Eliot School to provide one.

Elizabeth Hopkins
Elizabeth Hopkins (b. 1993) is a photographic artist and educator based in Boston, MA. A lifelong visual artist, Hopkins discovered her passion for photography during a road trip across the Midwest. She is a recent graduate of Massachusetts College of Art and Design, where she earned her master’s in photography. She holds a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Skidmore College.
Hopkins has shown her work in numerous art galleries, including MassArt x SoWa (Boston, MA), Galatea Fine Art (Boston, MA), Cambridge Art Association (Cambridge, MA), and the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts (Providence, RI). Her images have appeared in publications such as F-Stop Magazine and Pearl Press. She received second place as an emerging artist in Plymouth Center for the Arts’ 2025 annual photography exhibition.

- DSLR or mirrorless camera - The Eliot School can provide 4 cameras for students to use during the class (choose this option at registration). Otherwise, students must bring their own DSLR instead.
