Intro to Improv Quilting: Star Blocks 1F26

Age Group:
Adults

In this 8-week class, students will learn the fundamentals of improvistional quilting using star blocks as a jumping off point. Students will begin by learning standard quilting practices such as cutting, pinning, machine piecing, and sandwiching to construct three varieties of star block. Once they have mastered these basic skills, they will begin improvising to create their own unique quilt blocks. These will then be assembled to create a small throw or baby quilt.

Students will walk away with a completed small quilt and the skills to continue improvisational quilting by machine or hand on their own.

Do you need access to an Eliot School sewing machine or are you bringing your own? The Eliot School has 6 sewing machines available, please indicate at checkout in the "Order Comments" section whether you plan to use your own machine or need Eliot School to provide one.

Experience with a sewing machine required.

Make up date: 11/24/26

Sylvie Rosenkalt

Sylvie Rosenkalt has been quilting since childhood. She is an educator, disability cultural activist, and lifelong maker. Her quilting practice embraces odd shapes and asymmetry, allowing the improvisational process to guide the final product. Sylvie machine-pieces her quilts and hand-quilts with white thread, highlighting the irregular beauty of the stitching. She finds joy in embracing improvisation as a quilter, trumpeter and dancer.
