Weaving Shape: From Basketry to Sculpture 1F26
Create functional baskets and sculptural forms using the hexagonal weave, a strong and versatile pattern rooted in the geometry of the hexagon. Students will explore traditional basketry techniques while working with both natural and synthetic materials to create open hex weaves and mad weaves.
Through hands-on experimentation with structure, pattern, and form, participants will craft 2–3 finished baskets and/or sculptural pieces to take home.

Bethany Strohm
Bethany Strohm is a Boston-based educator and artist. She teaches writing and humanities seminar courses at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She holds a BFA in painting and an M.Ed. in art education, but began making baskets in 2019 and became immediately enamored by the craft. Her sculptural baskets combine organic and geometric forms through the technique of the mad weave, a form of triaxial plaiting. Strohm is also the editor of the National Basketry Organization’s basketry+ Magazine, a print publication that features basketry artists, museums, and collections from across the United States.

Materials to bring to class:
Students will pay a $30 fee to the instructor on the first day of class by Venmo, cash or check, which covers all class materials, but students are invited to bring their own paints, collage materials, or found objects for the final project.
