In this class students will create beautiful swirls and mottling colors on paper with marbling. Students will earn "ebru", the Turkish-style of marbling, on water thickened with carrageenan (Irish moss) as well as experiment with a range of materials, colors and papers to create lovely, unique designs. Marbled paper is striking when used as book end papers, portfolio covers, and more. All participants will have their own marbling vat, custom color choices, and plenty of paper types. We’ll explore the historical techniques and contemporary trends in this unique form of aqueous surface decoration.

Beginners and repeat students are welcome.  Dress for a mess!

Hand-bound books create unique formats for presenting photography, prints, mixed media artworks, and more. In this class students will learn techniques for both softbound and hardbound versions of this flexible book structure. We'll begin with the basics of book arts and the single section or "signature", and then we'll expand the idea to multiple signatures like the "Dos Equis" binding. Its name comes from the 2-needle stitching that crosses back and forth between the signatures of the book interior. Beyond the act of binding, stitching can be a wonderful tool for connecting collage materials, as well as mark-making to add dimension and conceptual possibilities to your artworks.

All materials provided. Open to everyone ages 18 & up, all skill levels, artists, non-artists, and you folks that are curious.
