This introductory woodworking class offers hands-on experience with foundational techniques for carving kiln-dried hardwood using hand tools. The first project will be a simple carved spoon, offering experience with essential carving processes including wood selection and preparation, safe tool use, sharpening, clamping, bandsaw safety, whittling, and surface treatment.
For the second project, students will design and carve an object of their choice, such as a hand-carved bowl, small sculpture, wall hanging, or utensil. Throughout the course, students will also explore fundamental sculptural elements including form, texture, and surface.
Designed for those interested in continuing to carve beyond the classroom, this course places a strong emphasis on developing the skills, tool knowledge, and home workshop practices needed to support an ongoing carving practice.

Isaac Gewirth
Isaac Gewirth is a Boston-based designer and craftsperson. They earned their BA and BFA through the combined program between Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, where they studied material culture and studio art. Isaac has a passion for understanding how things are made, loves spending time in the woodshop, working with their hands, and experimenting with different methods and processes of making. Isaac’s practice seeks to reconcile their identities as a woodworker and designer with their political commitments, examining themes of status, taste, quality, and ethical consumption. In the classroom, they emphasize process over product, fostering a collaborative, lighthearted environment—filled with music, lively conversation, and plenty of curiosity.

Lumber for the first project is provided in class. Additional lumber for student-driven project will be available for purchase in class (approximately $15-30, depending wood type and size).
Instructor will provide all finishing supplies for a $25 material fee.
