Pysanky, a traditional Ukrainian egg-decorating technique, uses layers of wax and colored dye to achieve beautiful, complex designs. In time for Easter, learn color layering, localized application, and use of different tool sizes for varied results. At the end, remove the wax to reveal the finished egg.

In this course we will be exploring the boundaries of sequential art.

Creating original stories for comic strips, comic books, graphic novels, and any other form of graphic narratives you can dream up. Students are encouraged to bring all variety of drawing styles, from stick figures to Daumier and beyond.

Emphasis in this course is on the way we communicate with sequential image narratives, not on how to draw cartoon characters. We will be exploring the grammar, iconography, symbolism, and the pictograms used by the masters of the comic medium and we will move through the entire process of sequential art story telling from inception to print.

Wicker weaving is a style of weave that involves the use of multiple weavers together to create an interlocking pattern which results in added strength to the completed item.  Gain a comprehensive overview of basket weaving, including processing materials, introduction of color, basket materials and structures. Each student will complete a wicker bisquit/roll basket.

Using a store-bought hardbound sketchbook, you will learn several processes for creating a dramatic journal you can use for writing, collecting, collaging, or whatever suits your taste.

Using flowers, sticks, leaves and found objects we will imprint paper and fabric with imagery and patterns from the natural world. Students will learn how to use what grows all around them to make beautiful textiles.

Using a store-bought hardbound sketchbook, we will work our way through several processes to create a dramatic journal you can use for writing, collecting, collaging, or whatever suits your taste. You will learn new techniques for painting, printing, making transfers, cut-outs, pop-ups, and extensions while creating a one-of-a-kind journal.

By the end of the series you will have a finished book unlike any you’ve ever had before as well as your own handmade foamy stamps and other printing materials.
